Can I adjust my monthly payment amount myself?
Did you receive an email stating that your monthly payment amount has been adjusted? If so, we recalculated whether your current monthly amount still sufficiently covers the energy costs we expect you to incur up to your next annual statement.
Your monthly payment amount is an advance payment. The actual costs are ultimately determined by your actual energy consumption and, with a dynamic contract, the market prices at the times when you use energy.
We adjust the monthly payment amount during the year when we expect that otherwise you may have to make a larger additional payment on your annual statement.
Price developments in 2026
The energy market has been changing in 2026. Gas prices in particular are sensitive to developments related to supply, demand, gas reserves, and international events.
Changes in gas prices can also affect electricity prices. When gas-fired power plants are needed to meet total demand for electricity, their costs affect the market price of electricity. This is separate from the origin of the electricity supplied by NextEnergy: price formation in the electricity market and the origin of electricity are two different things.
With a dynamic contract, your prices move with the market. Prices can therefore rise or fall. An adjusted monthly payment amount does not mean that we expect current prices to remain the same for the rest of the year.
End of net metering scheme as of January 1, 2027
Do you have solar panels? If so, another important change will take effect on January 1, 2027: the net metering scheme will end. From that point on, you will no longer be able to offset electricity you feed back into the grid against electricity you draw from the grid at another time. You will still receive compensation for electricity fed back into the grid.
As a result, starting in 2027, it will become more financially important to use as much of the solar power you generate yourself directly as possible. After all, electricity you generate and use directly yourself does not need to be drawn from the grid.
This change may affect your future energy costs and therefore the calculation of your monthly payment amount.
What do we take into account?
When calculating your monthly payment amount, we consider, among other things:
- your historical and recent energy consumption;
- your expected consumption up to your next annual statement;
- seasonal effects;
- the current market prices for gas and electricity;
- the monthly payment amounts that have already been invoiced;
- any shortfalls or surpluses that have arisen during the year.
If we expect your current monthly payment amount to be insufficient to cover your costs up to your annual statement, we may adjust the amount during the year.
After your annual statement, we recalculate the amount based on your actual consumption over the past year.
Why was my monthly payment amount increased even though my consumption has not increased?
A higher monthly payment amount does not automatically mean that you have started using more energy.
The amount may increase, for example, because:
- market prices have changed;
- your previous monthly payment amounts were lower than your actual costs;
- a shortfall arose earlier in the year;
- your expected consumption in the coming months is higher due to the season;
- an existing difference must be divided over fewer remaining months until your annual statement.
What if my situation has changed?
Recent changes are not always immediately reflected in our calculation. Examples include solar panels, a home battery, a heat pump, an electric car, air conditioning, or a change in the number of residents.
Has your situation changed significantly recently? If so, the proposed monthly payment amount may not align as well with your future consumption.
Keep track of your costs yourself
Through the NextEnergy app, you can track your energy consumption and costs throughout the year. This allows you to see how your energy costs are developing and whether your monthly payment amount still suits your situation.
Where can I find my invoices?
You can find your invoices in the NextEnergy app:
- Open the NextEnergy app.
- Click the person icon in the top-right corner.
- Go to Finances.
- Here you can find the invoices issued for your contract.
You will also receive your monthly invoice by email.
Your complete payment history is currently not available as a separate overview in the app or your online account.
Can I adjust my monthly payment amount myself?
Yes. You can choose a different amount using the link in the email about your monthly payment amount.
You can also do this through the app:
- Open the NextEnergy app.
- Click the person icon in the top-right corner.
- Go to Finances.
- Adjust your monthly payment amount here.
Keep in mind that lowering your monthly payment amount does not change your actual energy costs. If you pay less in advance during the year than the amount you ultimately use in energy, you will pay the difference on your annual statement.
Do you think the amount is incorrect?
