How do I read the meter readings?
Your energy consumption in your home is precisely monitored by two small boxes in your meter cupboard. These are the electricity and gas meters you'll find in your meter cupboard. Super handy because these meter readings ensure that your annual bill corresponds to your energy usage. Additionally, you'll need the meter readings when you move house or switch to another supplier. But how do you actually read such a meter?
Electricity Meter
Electricity is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). There are three types of electricity meters: analog, digital, and smart meters. In an analog meter, a distinction is made between a single-rate meter and an analog meter with a dual-rate.
Which analog energy meter do I have?
If you have an analog meter with one register, it's a single-rate analog meter. If the meter has two registers, it's a dual-rate meter.
Analog
The analog meter has one register, which is a rotating disc resembling the numbers on a combination lock, and it displays the meter reading. You provide us with the complete meter reading. Are there numbers after the decimal point? You can ignore these; you don't need to provide them to us.
Analog dual-rate
Does your analog meter have two registers? Then it records the meter readings for the normal and off-peak rates. The top register is for the off-peak rate, and the bottom register is for the normal rate. It's important to provide both meter readings. Here too, you provide the complete meter reading without numbers after the decimal point.
On July 1, 2021, the signal for rate switching by the grid operators was turned off. Since then, your energy can only be billed based on the agreed single rate.
Digital energy meter.
A digital meter has a digital register. Every few seconds, a different register appears. The first register is your off-peak and normal rate, the second is your exported energy (if you have solar panels). Which register should you look at? The following table provides insight:
Register | Code | Definition |
1 / T1 | 1.8.1 | Consumption off-peak rate |
2 / T2 | 1.8.2 | Consumption normal rate |
3 / T3 | 2.8.1 | Exported off-peak rate |
4 / T4 | 2.8.2 | Exported normal rate |
Smart energy meter
The smart meter automatically sends the meter readings to us (if you have given permission). If no permission has been given, the meter reads out the same as a digital meter.
Which analog gas meter do I have?
Gas is expressed in m3, the same as your water meter. You can tell them apart because the gas meter is square/rectangular, while the water meter is round. So, look at the square/rectangular meter! Gas meters have only one register; you only provide the reading in the black boxes.
Do you have a digital gas meter? If you press the button to illuminate the screen, you read the complete meter reading without the numbers after the decimal point.
